Avondale's History & Revitalization
Founded in 1938, Avondale Shipyard once employed 26,000 people but closed in 2014 due to declining business and extensive disrepair. Since 2018, HOST has invested over $150 million to revitalize the property, building four deep-water docks, cleaning up environmental issues, and creating hundreds of jobs. By 2022, the transformed site, now Avondale Global Gateway, celebrated its grand opening, and in April 2023, HOST moved its corporate headquarters to the newly revitalized facility.
Avondale Shipyard
Avondale Shipyard, founded in 1938, and at its peak, was Louisiana’s largest employer, contributing to approximately 26,000 jobs in the state. However, business declined over time, forcing the shipyard to shutter in 2014.
The property, left in disrepair with unknown legacy issues, came with one major stipulation: Avondale could never build large ships again. HOST’s unique vision for the property was the most compelling option to transform Avondale Shipyard.
Building the Gateway
In 2018, HOST, with its unique vision for the property, committed $150 million to transform Avondale into the economic engine it is today. Over the next four years, T. Parker Host rebuilt and established four functioning deep-water docks, connected the property to the US Rail Network via Union Pacific, cleaned up the property and received a “clean bill of health” via a Louisiana DEQ No Further Action letter, created hundreds of full-time, well-paying jobs to execute on deliverables, and attracted hundreds of millions of dollars to invest from tenants.
Introducing Avondale Global Gateway
On October 7, 2022, Avondale Global Gateway celebrated its grand opening with hundreds of HOST team members, customers, Jefferson Parish community members, and elected officials including, former Louisiana Governor, John Bel Edwards. Recognizing the success and centrality of the Louisiana site to HOST’s business, HOST relocated its corporate headquarters to Avondale Global Gateway in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana in April 2023.
Community Outreach
For over 100 years, HOST has been committed to actively supporting the communities where we operate. Since opening the gates of Avondale Global Gateway in 2018, our team has been deeply involved in local events and initiatives that make a positive impact on the West Bank community. These efforts include the Second Harvest Food Drive, the Love the Boot Clean-Up Initiative, the Son of a Saint Mentee Tour & Panel Discussion, and many more.
In addition, in 2022 HOST announced a $500,000 donation to support the NOLA Coalition and other regional charitable organizations.
